Pharoh , male, neutered, one year old , found on the desert road near a compound where people were building a villa and asked our partner Susie Nassar the architect to  do it , and there she found them. Pharoh and his sister TEE, just skin and bones , very very thin, dehydrated and scared and trying to hide inside the ruins , it was then that she found them , at that time Susie was not yet part of ESMA so she made an appeal on the internet for all shelters to help save them because the owners will not have them there and would poison them , no reply came from any shelter , so we in ESMA came in and took both of them. Now they are just fine boy and girl and specially TEE who is a little cow unlike her picture when she came to us and we thought she will die . Susie has been  sponsoring them since we took them in .  Pharoh is a very kind dog and easy going , gentle with humans, and animals , good on the leash. loves to be in a company all the time.

Fahd, male , estimated 3 years , neutered, very lovely character, if you need to know how can a dog be a gentleman it is Fahd, respects himself and other dogs, very decent in demanding anything, great expressions with eyes. Knows how to deal with female dogs. No trouble or love of fighting or making problems. Has a very refined manner as if he comes from an aristocratic family. Easy going and loves the company of people so much.

Leila , female, 4 years old, not spayed, mother of 3 puppies Donia , Dina and Diaa, was rescued from a breeder keeping them on a balcony inside a box, she gave birth to 5 but due to the horrible conditions there 2 died, maybe small in size but her motherhood sense is larger than a dinosaur. She is attached to her babies in a way that is just amazing , although her puppies are 9 months now but she still treats them as they are newly born, she baths them , follow them everywhere, monitors their feeding , cleans them all day specially Donia the smallest in size. She is pure joy to anyone seeing her or carrying her, and you cannot help falling in love with this small bundle of pure joy who can teach many humans what is motherhood.

Socks, 8 months old, male, neutered,  the rescue of Bahra from the desert road when he was 3 months old, on the side of the high way , looking dead , but Bahra stopped to check if he is still alive and maybe injured as most cars hit lots of dogs there, first thing she noticed before reaching his side that he was still breathing but with difficulty, she started running to him and went down beside him , he was not injured but obviously with no food for water for days, he could not stand anymore and was just laying there ready to receive death, some guards approached her side to see what was she doing , the ones usually guarding the sand mines there , and she got to know from them that he was one of the babies of a mother dogs that used to live there , she was not seen for a while and all his brothers died out of hunger and thirst.

A lively dog, playful, easy with dogs , human and children, friends with many of the dogs there, goes on the leash easily, loves to play with the bones and small rubber toys.. The workers like to call him Akousha  because this is a name of a famous African football player.

Marzooka, female.  On a very exhausting day at the shelter and a very difficult day with horrible cases, Bahra and me were finally driving home and the conversation inside the car with the usual topic, funds .. resources.. money.. and at one of the very busy intersections in the one of the  most crowded area in Mohandesseen where both me and Bahra live, we found this little tiny puppy standing lost trying to find her way among all those cars and creatures that were non caring at all , as if this puppy does not exist , as if we were the only ones to see it and notice the limp in the leg, lost and uncertain was she but still not looking the usual scared thing we always see, and before I uttered the word stop Bahra had already  pulled by the side and in no time I was out of the car and in no time was also Bahra , we did not want to scare her so we stood away a little, I went down on my knee and started talking to her and very simply she came directly to me as if she understands and as if she says OH finally you are here, I still did not make any sudden moves , the limp in the front leg was more obvious now and she looked even more tiny, a small thing not more than 3 months old in this busy unmerciful and dangerous intersection leading directly to the street of the  minister of interior where surely there is no chance for her to live.

We were just talking in the car of the short funds and the no money but there was no chance we were leaving her there, Bahra moved back slowly opened the back door of the car, and as if in agreement I moved forward and touched her and told her COME , and guess what she followed till we reached the car and there easily enough I picked her up into the car, Very simply she sat back on the coach as if she drove in cars all her life, we took her home to Bahra's house , we gave her a hot bath, food and she seemed very comfortable and content  and before we know it came a telephone call , from one of our supporters , He was donating to us 10,0000 LE , I almost dropped dead, we had been calculating all the time in the car, we were worried for resources but we were not going to leave that to stop us from taking her and thinking of numbers, and before we know it she brought us luck and this is why we called her MARZOOKA, which means a person who always finds always his/her way for  goods and good fortune.

All that week , we had so much luck and the name stuck to her .

JUNA (female)

Again my sister Jihan makes a rescue and as usual - a double!  I came out of my TV show to find 16 missed calls from my sister, I really panicked as to what might be the reason for those calls, when I called back she was very upset told me about two small griffon dogs she found on the street. She was able to get the first one into her car but the other one took off running.  She went looking and came upon an old villa occupied by a porter and his wife.  She tried talking them into letting her take the dog but the old woman started yelling insults and threatening my sister.  This is when I got there.  The old woman looked like something out of a horror movie and I wasn’t sure of what I should be more scared of, her or the dark abandoned area.  She started screaming every nasty word at me, words I never thought possible coming out of anyone’s mouth… scary!   But I was able to look at the dog and immediately saw the discharge coming out of her mouth and nose along with a very bad cough.  The woman didn’t care what was going to happen to her anyway but was not going to give her up without a fight – hoping for money!  So I called backup, a catcher, driver and vet from our sister shelter.  We finally got “Juna”, brought her to our shelter and after examining her, noticed that she was pregnant.  She has now given birth to 3 puppies and all are doing fine.  She is a good mom and as soon as she gains more strength, we will blood-test her, treat her cough, spay and vaccinate and micro-chip her.  Juna is a friendly and sweet-natured girl who deserves the best!  How can anyone resist her beautiful sad eyes?

BEESO
Male, approx. 11 months old, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped.

Beeso was found as a tiny puppy tied to the back of a donkey cart by a rope being dragged along. Bahra noticed the scene on her way to the shelter one day and was not really sure that what she was seeing was true.  She stopped directly in front of the cart, rushed to the puppy and saw scratches all over his tiny little body, his face bleeding and looking at her with sad eyes.  Bahra cut the rope and took the puppy.  Just like that.  The look on her face at that point must’ve scared the “owner” as he didn’t dare to protest.  She took Beeso to the clinic for first aid and then home for lots of care, rest and home made food. His hair grew back long and shiny and he has been one of the first residents of ESMA.  Super-friendly, playful and sweet.  He loves balls, water, people!  He’s a good little boy who gets along with everyone.

SHERINE
Female, approx. 1 year old, spayed, vaccinated.
Our dear friend Mrs. Shahira El Khadem found Sherine in the street laying in a pool of blood with her front left leg in very bad shape, and it was immediately obvious that she had been shot by the “authorities.”  Mrs. Shahira brought her right away to one of the near-by vet clinics and as soon as they heard that this was a street dog, they said: ”Don’t bother, why waste your money on her, she’s just a street dog, we’ll put her down!”  Without hesitation she took Sherine back into her arms, left the clinic, called us and brought her to a vet we work with.  Sherine’s leg was beyond repair and had to be amputated.  Someone forgot to tell Sherine that she only has 3 legs!!!  This girl runs, skips and jumps, chasing after toys, all day long.  She has adapted well to safe life here at the shelter and gets along well with all the other dogs.  A friendly, charming girl and so happy, she has a constant smile on her face.  Quite addicting!

BANGY
Female, 7 months old, spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped.
Found as a 4 week old puppy by a tourist guide who rescued her from upper Egypt. Her littermates were found close by drowned in a canal by children and no sight of her mother. The guide could not just leaver her there, took her in and kept her for few weeks in his home, but his work schedule would not allow him to keep her forever and take care of her.   After contacting several places and the “no room” answer, the only other option for him was to put her back out into the street.  It nearly broke his heart, but just then, someone told him about us.  And here she is now!  Bangy immediately felt safe here and had no problems adapting to the life with many dogs.  She acts like she’s been here forever.  She was named after another Bangy we knew but their characters are complete opposites.  THIS Bangy is sweet, happy, loves attention and giving kisses.  Great girl all around.

DONIA
Female, 8 months old, spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped.
We rescued Donia and several of her litter mates from a breeder farm and we will spare you the disgusting details of what we saw there.  She’s very tiny, unlike her other 2 brothers, but the most lively of them, almost the size and weight of a cat.  But don’t let her size fool you.  She makes sure you notice her!  Her name means “world/universe” and she truly things she’s that big!  She is beyond cute and sweet and just precious.  What a fantastic personality, too.  You have to come and meet her!!! She is ready for traveling to
Europe starting Aug.’08, or any time to the USA.

PATCHI (Story told by Mona) Male, approx. 2 years old, vaccinated, neutered, micro-chipped.

He chose me, he adopted me, he decided to make me his rescuer. It was one of those horrible days where I visit pet shops to monitor the condition of animals there.  I hate the day  and the minute when it is time to go there although I also feel good that I will go and make difference, put water, put food, clean the cages and give love to the animals there.  On one of those days, when I went and saw the usual horror, there was this small white dog among many others, but he was going around himself trying to catch my attention, following me with his eyes from cage to cage, not interested in the food I placed in his cage. It was clear in his eyes, “GET ME OUT.”  All I could think of was, I wish to get you all out.  I was making a big fuss about his cage and the broken iron rods that were pointing towards inside and could cause him injuries.  The boy working in the shop went to open the cage to move him out as I went to open my car and get him something soft to sit on and some other food to get him interested in eating and all of a sudden something jumped under my arm into the car. It was Patchi!  When the boy came to take him he started growling and showing his teeth as if he were a rottweiler. No way was he going out, that was his clear message. He almost bit the hand of the boy but I put out my hand to him trying to calm him down and he immediately started licking it. I offered food, he ate. I sat there with him for a while to calm him, and then when I was about to leave took him out to get him back while my heart was weeping and aching as he put his paws around my neck behind my head and refused to leave me. Whenever the owner of the shop and the boy tried to get him, he immediately turned into a biting dog and that was it for me, I was not leaving without him.  I was told that Patchi was dropped off to be sold by his previous owner, as he didn’t want him anymore.   After words back and forth, I finally got the number for this guy and called him.  The entire time Patchi clung to me, weeping, not wanting to stay at this awful place.  I made him aware of this pet shop and how Patchi (and of course the others) was suffering and he actually felt bad (???) and came to pick him up.  He took my number incase he needed advice in the future.  Well, two days later he called and asked if we had room at the shelter for Patchi – OF COURSE!!!
Next day Patchi was dropped of at my office and I took him directly to the shelter and he is living with the cats in the cat house and he adores Jina and they are best friends.  He is such a LOVE!

MICKY
Male, approx. 1 year old, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped.
Micky was rescued by our dear German friend Marie Louise while she was walking along the beach in Hurghada.  The beaches in Hughada are routinely littered with poisoned chicken for the stray dogs to eat and die a very painful and slow death.  This is something that most tourists don’t know and the authorities don’t tell. Not taking a chance, we were called and the puppy brought to us.  Marie Louise’s judgment is one we all admire and trust.  Micky is a spunky little guy and gets along with all the other dogs, loves to play “chase” with his pack members and is very affectionate.

CAMEROON
Male – approx. 3 months old – vaccinated
Mona found this little guy screaming the night Egypt won the Africa Cup (soccer) against Cameroon.  He was making such a racket in a park in Aswan square that Mona heard him loud and clear, even over the partying soccer fans!  He wanted to be found, voicing his opinion about being abandoned.. he was angry!!!  Cameroon knew that Mona was there to rescue him and immediately jumped up onto large garbage piles to get to her though the fence, since the park was locked.  He was still ‘yelling’ at everyone once he was in the car on his way to Bahra’s home.  Mona’s sweatshirt provided comfort and before long he settled in and calmed down.  He spent the night at Bahra’s and arrived here the next day.  He is a BIG personality in a small package!!!  He hangs out with our big dogs and has no problem playing rough with them.  Our big boys let him get away with it, to a point.  He will be neutered in a few months.  Loves his red collar and bandana and… soccer balls – go figure!

HAMLETT
Male – approx. 6 years old - neutered, vaccinated
Our big momma’s boy Hamlett was rescued from poisoning along with his mom Sondoss and will not leave her side.  We will never ask him to either.  These two are a pair and we will only adopt them out together.  He is quiet, calm and thoughtful.  Loves to eat and it shows J His love and attachment to his mom are deep and strong.  Not that he is jealous or protective, he just loves to be around her at all times

SONDOSS – The Queen
Female – approx. 8 years old – spayed, vaccinated
She is the Queen of Mona’s heart and everyone at the shelter – dignified, well-mannered, expressive, sweet and a true mother.  She was respected by people and animals in the area where Mona found her, Hamlett and Roy (two of her sons) because of her character.  She gave birth to many litters there and took care of not only her own puppies but those of the other “moms” too.  The area was scheduled for another poisoning spree but luckily Sondoss, Hamlett, Roy and several others were rescued and now live here with us.  Sondoss is so clean that she will let our staff know if she had an ‘accident’ in her kennel!  Quite amazing for a street dog!! She loves her blanket, her bed and hates to change kennels, which we won’t make her do anymore!  Sondoss and Hamlett will only be for adoption together as they are inseparable.

REMA
Female – approx. 10 months old – vaccinated
Sweet Rema! When this beauty was only 5 months old, her owners decided that they didn’t want her after all and tossed her over their balcony onto the street.  She was able to get to safety suffering from a broken back leg.  We were notified by a good Samaritan and immediately got her to the shelter and operated.  Because of the surgery and the screw now in her hind leg, we have not spayed her, yet. Rema is a very feminine girl, shy but insists on knowing you.  Once she has decided that you are ok and will not hurt her, she will not leave your side.  Rema needs a lot of TLC and someone who will give her time to get to know you.

SHNOUKY
Male – approx. 5 years old – Neutered, vaccinated
Shnouky is one of four German shepherds we saved from a breeder farm.  As we were searching for a new land for the shelter, we looked at a new location and while there, heard sounds coming from an existing building.  The man showing us the property said those were dogs left behind from the breeder who used to rent the place.  We opened the doors and were absolutely horrified by what we found: small, filthy kennels in complete darkness.  No food or water.  Feces so deep, and the smells… good Lord!  The many dogs ran out into the sunshine and fresh air, hiding behind us as if begging us to free them from their ‘prison.’  Just as we were getting ready to leave with the dogs, the breeder showed up, who we immediately recognized.  She had previously been charged with animal abuse where dead dogs, cats and monkeys had been found in her home.  Rumor has it that she also owns a farm where she feeds dead animals to the living ones.  We’re investigating!   Shnouky is just great and everyone here loves this handsome social butterfly.  He gets along great with the other dogs and is mellow and easy-going.

SANDY
Female – German Shepherd - approx. 5 years old, spayed, vaccinated
Sandy – what a pretty girl!  She was another one of the GS’s rescued from the breeder farm and thanks us every day.  She has a very mellow character and is easy-going.  The markings on her face are stunning and her expressions are piercing.  A lady and true friend.  Will be your loyal companion for life.  She’s alert and eager to please.

SIRVANO
Female – German Shepherd -
approx. 5 years old, spayed, vaccinated
Sirvano is simply stunning!  What a beautiful girl inside and out.  She was one of the GS’s rescued from the breeder farm and expresses her gratitude in a very powerful way.  No matter where she is or what she is doing at the time we enter the play area, she will come bolting to us, start jumping for joy and it matters not if she is covered in mud or we’re carrying trays of stuff.  We might have to start thinking of wearing padding on our legs, since she sees them as stopping devices.  She laughs and plays and wants to show us around every day.. what a great girl.  Definitely needs some discipline training but in the right hands and with the right job, this special girl will blossom and be even happier.
