Reega, female, spayed, one year old, very friendly and knows how to make her choices. One morning our workers found this little kitty standing on the wall of the shelter, she meowed announcing her arrival and before they could reach out to get her she decided to jump down not fearing the dogs or anything, and she headed directly to the store room looking for the dry food. She was amazing and for a long while she slept with the workers in their room before we took her first to Bahra's house with the other cats till we finished the cat house and the whole group was moved there. She always has this wondering look in her eyes as if everything amazes her, she loves to hug and cuddle and has exceptionally nice colors. She will be a real joy to her new family.

Salma, female, 16 months old, spayed, ready to go to EU in October. Abandoned with her brother Selim by a foreign family. The usual story: cannot take them home to Europe, too expensive, the quarantine problem. The lady was desperate, no other shelter would accept them, it was a matter of few days before she heard of us at ESMA and was desperately calling us as her last resort otherwise she would put them both to sleep or leave them on the street. We accepted them immediately and found real treasures in them. Salma is such an attractive girl that reminds you of little princesses out of a fairy take; Tries to catch your attention most of the time, love being rubbed under the chin and being held , Very good with group of cats and used to the presence of small sized dogs too.

Sergi, male , neutered , around one year old, one of the first kittens that came to us with his sister Suzi, and the first to go for adoption with a Russian lady who fell in love with this sweet little playful kitten the minute her eyes dropped on him, and we were very happy about the adoption just to receive a call from this lady 9 months later informing us she is pregnant and has to give the cat back , we tried to understand her logic but were faced with stubbornness worse than many other Egyptian females who were brought up with such ridiculous ideas, and any way we were no more comfortable to leave our cat with a family that could give their baby cat that easy, so back to his first home came Sergi, the panic and pain in his eyes broke our hearts , there was this look of what am I doing here away from my home , where am I? What did I do wrong and there was no way for us to explain it is not his fault at all but his bad luck, Segi now is more adapted to the cat house but still misses being the ONLY cat in the house and we are looking to give him this privilege again. Can leave to EU in November.

Jamila ( meaning beautiful), is really a beauty in looks and character, a very affectionate cat who does not get tired from giving love and affection to humans, she was one of three kittens found when they were 3 days old only with closed eyes , she was the weakest and tiniest of them, we did not think she will make it at all, Jamila and her brothers were adopted by Precious who was feeding her two kittens then, Precious did a great job and Jamila and her brothers made it to safety and lived.
Jamila is spayed , microchiped and ready to go to Germany in November.

Laila, female, Siamese, almost one year old , very sweet , a typical female elegant Siamese, with all the finesse and sensitivity Siamese cats have. Found abandoned on the street, she was horribly terrified not knowing how she ended up there, found by a French lady who took her in but could not keep her so she contacted us for help, in the beginning she was simply terrified to be touched by any person or cat , but gradually she became very friendly and affectionate and cuddly. Loves to sit on high places and watch the outside world, her eyes speak volumes on the amount of depression she felt, ready to go to Germany in October .

MINGY (male)
Mingy arrived with Misho and Clinton from the same British family who could not take them home to
England. Mingy has a very distinguished MEOW. He was one cat that really gave me sleepless nights. During our shelters’ transitional period, he managed to escape and not in regular streets but into the corn fields in one of the suburbs of
Giza right before
Sakkara. It took us 22 days with day and night searches, placing food 3 times a day in different areas, putting traps, sending workers out with nets, making signs and notes, offering a reward. He was seen several times but every time in a different place. I jumped walls and fences, walked in fields and among brush until we received a call from the guard of the neighbor villa to the place we were renting temporarily. “The cat is here” and that was the sentence I was dreaming of for several nights. We brought him to Bahra’s house right away. He was fine, but thin, ate and drank a lot and had a few scratches on him.
Mingy is a very special cat; not just to us but to the other cats, too. He has a special relationship with several of them; the females love him and the male cats consider him the big brother; all would go to him for company. He is very kind to them and to kittens, is used to small size dogs too, speaks out very clearly and loudly when he wants to tell me something, very affectionate, if he hears my voice from inside the cat house when I enter the shelter he calls out for me. A very content cat , does not like problems and never gave us any problem. It would be very very difficult to let him go but I really wish he get the best home and family as he would make them the happiest ever to have him.

BONNI
Female – approx. 2 years old – spayed, vaccinated
Bonni, found as a lost skeleton in
Heliopolis. Dr. Nour thinks she was used for breeding several times before her body condition could not take it anymore and she was dumped into the street to fend for herself. Bonni was in deep depression when she arrived here and remained that way for 2 months but finally we managed to get her out of it and she seems to be quite content with her life now. Most of the time this is her way of relaxing as she’s probably thinking of this weird world and people who would do this to other creatures; she likes to think a LOT.

MISHO
Male – approx. 4 years old – neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, ready to go starting July '08
This is Misho, the core of heart of all of us and Bahra's very very very special boy. His ways of communication, his very sweet touches and hugs when he joins his paws behind your neck… the energy and power coming from him when you hold him to you is unbelievable, and it always sounds and looks like he is whispering to you; his body language is very high and he is easily attached and knows how to make you understand and feel that you are his own and he is only yours. Abandoned by a British family who, as usual “could not”, take their cats with them even if blood tested due to quarantine procedures. He was left to us with Mingy (picture coming soon) and
Clinton. A real treasure for any cat lover! The best thing to happen to anyone who wants to know what a cat’s love is.

SELIM
Male – approx. 18-24 months old – neutered, vaccinated,
Selim was abandoned with his sister Salma by a foreign family. Selim is such a nice boy with a very attractive character; hard to miss with his so handsome face and expressive eyes; likes your attention and does not mind sharing it; loves playing, climbing trees, windows and his greatest pleasure is sunbathing. He has his own special way of catching your heart. Very good with group of cats and used to the presence of small sized dogs too. (picture of his sister coming soon)

NOUR
Male – born in July '07– neutered, vaccinated
Nour takes his name after his rescuer our great vet Dr. Nour! We named him not just because he saved him but because we are so grateful and proud of him as a vet too, his contribution to animal welfare and his free medical help to shelters is just so great, and we decided that this boy lucky enough to be rescued by him to be named after him. Nour (light) is almost one year old, so lively, neutered, and so manly too. Chooses his friends carefully, has his own schedule as if he makes it every morning: playing time, eating time, napping time and so on; very disciplined too. Is great with a group of cats and is used to small sized dogs too.

PRECIOUS
Female – approx. 2 years old – spayed, vaccinated
Precious, found and cared for by Barbara and John, two Americans living in Maadi. They cared for her for quite a while and watched as she lost many kittens to accidents and other reasons, but this time Barbara was not going to stand aside and watch this happen again to her. She contacted us and brought Precious and her two kittens to us, who later became Faress and Qamar. That same day we found 3-day old kittens and Precious was the answer to our prayers. She took them in without hesitation, nursed Gameela and Karamelo and Helal to health and strength. Unfortunately Helal did not survive. All the others turned out to be great kids. Precious is such a kind girl although shy. She definitely needs to get her own home where her very nice character would flourish. She has very expressive eyes too and you can feel her communicating. Beautiful colors on her, too.

CLINTON
Male – approx. 4 years old – neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped
And “yes” he was named after THE
Clinton we all know. This playboy is in love with half the female feline population here, although he favors Suzi right now.
Clinton’s eyes never fully developed and he has limited vision, but gets around very well. Quite the fancy prancer, he has a walk that reminds us of a ballet dancer. He, along with 3 other males, was dropped off by a British family because, and like most of the time, they could not take him back to the
UK. Even though he had all his papers, vaccinations, micro-chipping etc., most people don’t like to see their ‘beloved’ animals in quarantine for an extended period of time. We don’t understand it! Come take a look at Cinton, the Casanova. You will fall in love with him!

DAHAB (Gold)
Male – almost 5 months old – neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped next month
Dahab truly is our gorgeous golden boy, just look at his color!!! Bahra found him hiding and crying under a car just after she’d parked hers. Just 3 weeks old at the time, so tiny, shivering and dehydrated, Bahra took him home and he became part of her orphanage, where she nursed him back to health and strength. This little guy would drink drink drink, more than the other many kittens Bahra had under her care at the time. We owe her so much for taking these babies in and caring for them until their strong enough to come to the shelter. Now strong and heathy, Dahab is a friendly, funny and playful little guy.

BINGO “The Boss”
Male – approx. 5 years old – neutered, vaccinated
(notice one eye blue, the other yellow!!!)
This bossy beauty was found abandoned roaming the streets in
Heliopolis when a kind lady found him and took him to the nearest vet clinic. He was treated for skin problems and malnutrition and has since made a full recovery. Bingo is an old soul, very quiet, observant and the dominant male around here. Not a fighter, but will occasionally put his paw down when one of our “teenagers” steps out of line. He loves people and is looking for that purrrfect, calm and forever home.

JIJI & JINA
These two cuties were found on the same day by Mona’s sister “Jihan” (their names derived from “Jihan”).
Both female, both approx. 4 months old and fully vaccinated.
 |
JiJi was hiding in the garbage next to our building and my sis still does not know how she noticed this little kitty. All she saw were tiny eyes. She picked her up and realized how weak and fragile JiJi was. This poor little feline was so happy about the rescue and immediately went to sleep in Jihan’s car. JiJi likes to watch people and those barking creatures outside. Loves to lay in the window and enjoy the sun… she’s a very mellow cat.

Jina, here she comes! As Jihan was driving with her new addition sleeping on the backseat, she spotted yet another kitten. Jina! But this time the rescue would not be so easy. Jina was wandering on the sidewalk along one of the busiest streets in
Cairo and looked like she was about to cross over, which would have meant death for her. Jihan stopped her car in the middle of the busy 4-lane road and ran out, bringing traffic to a halt. Now, anyone who has ever experienced driving in
Cairo knows what a chaos this is and that it is very easy to get hurt, if not worse. But Jihan was determined to get to this little kitten, letting nothing stand in her way, and she got her! Way to go Jihan!!! Jina has a lovely character. She wants to be held and be near you at all times, likes to sit on your shoulder and does not mind dogs at all. Very sweet!

DALILA
Female – approx 18 months old, spayed, vaccinated
Mother of
Safi (above). Dalila came to ESMA with her husband Amir, baby
safi and baby Taymoor, they were all abandoned by one family who decided cats need time and effort and they are not up to it anymore, unfortunately Taymoor was sick as many families do not believe that home cats need vaccination. She is a MAU breed which is the typical Egyptian cat . Simply GORGEOUS! |

SUZI “The Sweet”
Female – approx. 9 months old –Vaccinated
Suzi is a Mau-Mix and was found, along with her brother, by our volunteer Paul, when she was just a kitten (one month old). She is fairly small in size but don’t let that fool you! She’s playful and sweet and would do just about anything for balls and ribbons. She can’t seem to get enough of either. Suzi is also very much in love with our blind cat “
Clinton” and doesn’t seem to mind the dogs at all. Sweet girl!

DOLLY
Female – approx. 8 moths old, vaccinated
Dolly is the victim of a car accident, which left the bottom half of her tail numb. She is the real example of what the word SWEET means, very cuddly, nice, lovable and loves humans dearly. She has the most beautiful round face you have ever seen. She also loves kittens; when she arrived here, she was followed by 3 additional rescued kittens and she took them in immediately and started acting like a mom, although she herself is a kitten! A real doll.
